Pink Mangrove, Breath, salt and dye on cotton

Through creating a hypothetical island, I contemplate how a mangrove and myself adapt to our environments. The anomaly of a pink mangrove occurs when unusually high salinity and lack of oxygen in a mangrove allows Microalga Dunaliella Salina bacteria to grow. In this case it is due to drought conditions in Martinique. In this performance I lie beside the mangrove breathing into an inflatable ‘island’ floating on this temporary, complex body of water. Using my body as a filter, I inhale oxygen and inflate the island with oxygen-deprived breath. The inflated island becomes a new environment that mirrors the behavior of the pink bacteria, both thriving and growing through oxygen deprivation.
